Into digital media? Like pushing the boundaries beyond what is now into what could be? Cool, then you should be checking out the Masters of Digital Media Program’s open house tonight at the Centre for Digital Media on Great Northern Way tonight.

Oh, can’t make it in person? No problem, M2O has you covered because we’re livestreaming the whole thing via Adobe Connect (in partnership with BCIT):

Event Details:

Time: 6:00 – 7:30pm Pacific Standard Time (sign-in begins @ 5:30pm)

Registration is required.

Can’t make it in person? Join us for this event Live Online!

[From Masters of Digital Media Program Open House | Masters of Digital Media Program at the Centre for Digital Media]

If you want to attend in person or virtually, you need to register for the event (there is still time) and if that isn’t cool enough Joanna Robinson, Research Assoc. Virtual Worlds, is going to stream it into Second Life as well (fitting as William Gibson’s birthday was Tuesday).

For the past two months M2O and BCIT have been doing virtual seminars to small businesses throughout the province using the same platform and technology. We’re making this huge province a little smaller using some great technology. Imagine you’re in Kelowna or Prince George and you’d like to listen to the best and the brightest in business, entrepreneurship, technology, or social media. Yes, you could come to Vancouver or Victoria for a conference or meeting or invite a speaker to you, but that isn’t very cost effective.

The solution we’ve found is pretty elegant. We patch our standard setup for taping Connected Life episodes and rig it to pass into a dedicated machine which pumps it into Adobe Connect. Because we’re using our regular recording set up, this isn’t webcam quality picture or sound, this is the real deal. Two cameras, live switching between close and wide, audio piped right into the stream from real mics.

This would be cool enough, but we push to the next level by also recording to DV tape so we can reproduce the talk in nearly any format we wish.

It’s a slick setup that we’ve now made mobile, so this is just the beginning.

Watch tonight and see what it’s like.

Bradley “aka Fearless Leader, Grand Poobah, Ye who signs the cheques” Shende was profiled in the current issue of Business in Vancouver on how Media2o Productions (aka M2O) came to be. As you all know I joined M2O list past november, well into M2O’s first year. I’ve heard this story several times, but you know I really like telling it.

Why?

Because it shows both what kind of man Bradley is and his vision of the online world and technology in general. Come on, faced with a pink slip would you have thought about not only starting a company but also pulling the team together who were also let go too?

Maybe, buy, but could you have pulled it off? Could you have a business doing great in year two with some pretty darn cool (secret) projects on the go?

Yeah I didn’t think so.

So here’s how it went down…

Media2o Productions was spun out of Chalk Media last year after the company abandoned the video production business to develop an e-learning application for smartphones. Although Chalk Media’s decision to shift gears proved successful – it’s finalizing its $23.1 million sale to BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion (TSX:RIM) – Bradley Shende, Media2o’s CEO, believes the sponsored-content premise that made Chalk Media’s show a success on television will translate to the Internet.

“In my opinion, they threw the baby out with the bathwater,” said Shende, an executive producer of Dave Chalk Connected for six years. “I ran outside and caught the baby – seven people that otherwise were looking at pink slips.”

With Shende as host, Media2o launched the second season of ConnectedLifeTV.com last November.

[From Business in Vancouver February 24-March 2, 2009; issue 1009]

Not bad eh?

Now you understand why I love coming to work everyday.

Okay the 52″ Sony Bravia sitting here to test out/shoot doesn’t hurt either.

Tweet This Post

We had our fingers crossed. I was on standby with cell phone, email and all the techie tools you can imagine for tech support. In the end we only had two calls for support and both were just making sure they had the right URL. The rest of the hour and a half session went off pretty much without a hitch.

Yes we had some minor issues with batteries and tapes and Bradley (no surprise given his on camera energy) would not freakin stand still (the more you move, the more bandwidth is required to send the video, so less is available for sound), but man otherwise out of the park.

The technology we used was Adobe’s Connect platform. No, it’s not the cheapest solution in the world, however since the people connecting only need Flash player. Flash player is so stable and powerful that this makes Connect a great solution.

Today’s class was on Web 2.0 and your business. We had well over a dozen chambers of commerce tuning in from around BC and in each room there could be a dozen or more people! Talk about cost effective teaching.

You can learn more about the Virtual Business Hub at BizHubCentral . These classes are subscription based, so we won’t be putting up the whole slide deck or notes, but if you’re a small business in BC you should look into signing up.

What’s on tap next? How to leverage the Olympics for your business on Feb 3. With about $300 million left in contracts and tenders, now is the time to get a piece of the pie.

Recorded a little video with the flip cam:

And took a bunch of pictures behind the scenes before we started:
