I’ve been recently introduced to the Social Media World from studying Multi-Media at UBC. It’s been a real eye opener to find out that I’ve been out of touch with how to network now through Social Media.

Everyday, I blog, Twitter and use Facebook for networking.

It’s great and I feel so connected in sharing information.

Also, I was also pleasantly surprised to read that we as Canadians are rated tops in using Social Media.

Here’s an excerpt by Gillian Shaw, The Vancouver Sun, December 3, 2009.

“That’s the profile that comes out of a Forrester Research report released today that shows four out of five online Canadians use social media and almost 57 per cent participate in social networks at least once a month, making them the most active social networkers of any market regularly surveyed by Forrester.”

After reading Shaw’s article I’m happy to know about Social Media, and it’s not too late for you to learn this new way to network.

And did you know according to Shaw’s article, “Online Americans are the next most active social networkers behind Canadians at 51 per cent with the United Kingdom coming third at 38 per cent.

Facebook is the most popular social network in Canada, with almost 10 times as many weekly visitors as MySpace.”

Christine

A little while ago let folks know that the two courses I proposed had been accepted by UBC Continuing Ed for the summer course season. Found out yesterday that the courses are now up and you can register for them. Below are the course descriptions, etc:

Introduction to Audio and Video Podcasting
TRIS HUSSEY
Learn the basics of audio and video podcasting from one of Vancouver’s social media specialists in this one-day, hands-on workshop. Students learn how to record, edit, encode, and post audio and video podcasts. Topics include: hardware, software, how to add music and titles, where to post your podcast, search engine optimization and how to host a live Internet radio show. One day is all you need to get on air and podcast with confidence and ease!
IM 805 S09A Sat, Jun 6, 9am-4pm; UBC Robson Square. $350+GST.

Build a Website with WordPress
TRIS HUSSEY
Learn how to make a professional looking website using the WordPress blogging platform with little to no coding required. Led by one of Vancouver’s WordPress and social media experts, this half-day workshop teaches you how to use WordPress to build dynamic, elegant and professional looking websites quickly and easily. Learn the settings required to turn a WordPress blog into a website, how to tune it for search engines, what plug-ins to install and how to choose the right theme for your website. You don’t have to know how to code to have a great website, you just have to know how to click.
IM 810 S09A Sat, Jun 13, 9am-12noon; UBC Robson Square. $175+GST

[From UBC Computers, Media and Technology - Multimedia Summer Programs 2009 - Summer Workshops]

Here is my goal for each of these courses, I want you to leave with real, tangible knowledge. Finish the full-day podcasting course and have a podcast. Finish the half-day website class and have the beginnings of a website. The half-day course is based on my WordCamp Whistler Talk so I’ll be able to spend more than 20 mins on how to put a site together.

I’ll have to double-check with UBC, but I’m fine with people bringing their own laptops and working on their own sites. The classes are going to be in the computer labs and will be the roll up your sleeves just do it style.

If I remember correctly, the podcasting course will be held in a Mac-based lab and the other in a PC-based one. I’ll make sure that in both classes no one is left out in the cold.

As you would expect, I’ll be using and showing my favourite tricks and tools that I use, so bring a flash drive if you want to go home with installers.

Of course if you have questions, feel free to ping me at tris [shift-2] media2o.com or tris [shift-2] trishussey.com

Into digital media? Like pushing the boundaries beyond what is now into what could be? Cool, then you should be checking out the Masters of Digital Media Program’s open house tonight at the Centre for Digital Media on Great Northern Way tonight.

Oh, can’t make it in person? No problem, M2O has you covered because we’re livestreaming the whole thing via Adobe Connect (in partnership with BCIT):

You are invited to attend the Masters of Digital Media (MDM) Program Open House on March 19th hosted by the Centre for Digital Media (CDM) at the Great Northern Way Campus. This is the final Open House before the March 31st application deadline. It is an event not to be missed for students with a passion for digital media and considering graduate school.

Come mix and mingle with current faculty, students and soon-to-be graduates at the Open House. There will be samples of student work, facility tours and informaiton about the program, scholarships and program admission requirements.

Event Details:

Date: Thursday, March 19th

Time: 6:00 – 7:30pm Pacific Standard Time (sign-in begins @ 5:30pm)

Registration is required.

Can’t make it in person? Join us for this event Live Online!

[From Masters of Digital Media Program Open House | Masters of Digital Media Program at the Centre for Digital Media]

If you want to attend in person or virtually, you need to register for the event (there is still time) and if that isn’t cool enough Joanna Robinson, Research Assoc. Virtual Worlds, is going to stream it into Second Life as well (fitting as William Gibson’s birthday was Tuesday).

For the past two months M2O and BCIT have been doing virtual seminars to small businesses throughout the province using the same platform and technology. We’re making this huge province a little smaller using some great technology. Imagine you’re in Kelowna or Prince George and you’d like to listen to the best and the brightest in business, entrepreneurship, technology, or social media. Yes, you could come to Vancouver or Victoria for a conference or meeting or invite a speaker to you, but that isn’t very cost effective.

The solution we’ve found is pretty elegant. We patch our standard setup for taping Connected Life episodes and rig it to pass into a dedicated machine which pumps it into Adobe Connect. Because we’re using our regular recording set up, this isn’t webcam quality picture or sound, this is the real deal. Two cameras, live switching between close and wide, audio piped right into the stream from real mics.

This would be cool enough, but we push to the next level by also recording to DV tape so we can reproduce the talk in nearly any format we wish.

It’s a slick setup that we’ve now made mobile, so this is just the beginning.

Watch tonight and see what it’s like.
