Have you seen strange lights above Vancouver the last several nights? Well, it’s not a call for Batman (like I originally thought).

Vectorial Elevation has been lighting up Vancouver since last Thursday and will continue until Feb 28, 2010. You can take part in Vectorial Elevation as it is interactive artwork. It is looking very popular with nearly 6 million hits to the site so far.

Another fun option for participatory art during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics – We Are Watching by visual artist Rina Liddle. A part of Bright Light, We Are Watching offers people the opportunity to send in video clips documenting any aspect of the Olympic games and celebrations that are happening in Vancouver and Whistler. The unedited footage will be projected, on a building in the Lower Eastside of Vancouver during the Olympic & Paralympic games.

Make sure you take advantage of these innovative ways to tap into your creativity because they will only be here for a limited time. Will look forward to seeing your masterpieces in the night skies of Vancouver!

If you haven’t checked out the Third Tuesday meetings in Vancouver – you’re really missing out on some great events. As the name suggests, the meetings happen every Third Tuesday and include great speakers on everything from new media marketing strategies to how to run a virtual office.

Next week’s meeting is going to feature our very own social media conscierge – Tris Hussy.

Tris will be asking the question: “Do you get the message?” He’ll be exploring the idea that at any given moment we can use a myriad different ways to get a message out, but which ones work best and when? Also, have our expectations of communications kept up with our technologies?

He’ll be giving tips on how to choose the best tool to get your particular message out – should you use Twitter? Create a Facebook group? Create a microsite? Or all of the above. Tune in to find out.

The meeting takes place April 21st at Republic (958 Granville St) at 7pm

About Tris:

Long-time blogger and social media expert, Tris got his start in tech running laboratories and doing tech support. After years of launching websites for the pharmaceutical industry, Tris jumped into blogging on a whim and hasn’t stopped yet. One of Canada’s first professional bloggers and recognized as a leading expert in both social media and business blogging, Tris continues to charge ahead pushing the edges of social media with whatever new technology catches his eye. Tris is sought after as a guest blogger on leading blogs including ZDNet and is writing an introduction to blogging book due out in mid-2009.

I can’t wait to check out the Projecting Change Film Festival this weekend. Running from April 2nd to April 5th Projecting Change is a Film Festival all about sustainability, the environment and, you guessed it, the changes we can make to make the world we live in more beautiful. With films that speak about everything from overfishing (The End of the Line) to the challenges facing American Indians (March Point), I don’t know how I am going to pick which films to see.

As an avid cyclist, I can’t wait to see Tina Hahn’s Tale of a Yellow Bike, the story about Maogosha Pyjor’s plight to keep Toronto’s Bike Share Program alive. Just as exciting is James Moll’s Running the Sahara. Narrated by Matt Damon, this documentary tells the story about three men who became the first to successfully run across the Sahara desert. Note to self: bring lots of water.

The first of its kind in Vancouver, what makes Project Change so inspirational is the fact that it tells the stories of how ordinary people like us can be catalysts for environmental and social change. I already feel inspired!

If you want find out more about the films playing at Project Change, be sure to check out their website – www.projectchange.ca.

With tickets starting at just $8, films will be followed by interactive discussions with guest speakers such as David Suzuki, local MP Joyce Murray and Ray Zahab, winner of some of the world’s most difficult footraces.

I was just checking out the Massive 2009 (April 1) speaker list. Lots of great speakers, including: friends of the blog – Tristan Jutras – founder of webspotter.com, Jennifer Lowther – Director of Social Media for 6S Marketing, and our very own Bradley Shende – founder of M2O .

I’m anxious to hear what they all have to say about the changing digital landscape. Still, the keynote I’m most looking forward to is: “How Social Media and Social Networking are turning sales and marketing upside-down” – featuring Shane Gibson and Stephen Jagger.

We’ll have a booth at the show, so be sure to come by and say hi. And we’ll also be giving away some tickets – so check back in over the next couple of weeks.

Tesla Motors has been making headlines with their electric-powered sports car, well I think we have something cooler up here. Maple Ridge-based Future Vehicle Technologies build a gas-powered car called the Alé (think olé with “ah” sound) which gets amazing gas milage (something like 90 MPG), but that was only the prelude to what they have on tap now…

The eVaro is a gas-electric hybrid that can hit 200 km/hr with over 135 mpg, and still be able to do 0-60 in 5 seconds. Yeah 5 seconds.

Right now the prototype only has one seat, but check it out, it’s street legal! It is registered and insured with ICBC!

We have two pieces of video for you about the car, plus a slide show of these amazingly cool cars:

Future Vehicle Technologies is a privately-held company currently seeking additional funding to bring this car to market in a couple years.

This morning Jack and I wandered over to the convention centre to see what cool new technology we could find that the mining investment conference. Yeah we were a little concerned too. I mean what are we going to find? Giant drills? A new way to dig a hole in the ground?

As you can see in this pun-filled introduction we might have been bright-eyed and bushy tailed, but maybe a wee concerned.

As it turns out we had nothing to fear because we connected up with a company based in Maple Ridge that is making an electric-powered sports car and a Vancouver-based geothermal energy company about to launch a power plant in Nevada.

Let’s get to the fun…

Back then it was at Tucows, but we finally had a chance to work together at b5media where I always knew Joey as a Mac-Linux guy. Yeah he did Windows, but it always seemed begrudgingly.

I don’t think I was the only one who was surprised when Joey took a job at Microsoft after b5. I finally had a chance to catch up with Joey at the Vancouver Bloggers Meetup.and chat about life at the Evil Empire. Joey was here in Vancouver to speak at Microsoft Tech Days about how to use .Net and ASP more efficiently:

“Microsoft achieved their goal of getting a computer on every desktop, so…what to do for an encore?” he said. Microsoft’s new approach of emphasizing software and services, along with the heterogenous nature of the software and hardware landscape and the ascent of Ray Ozzie to head the company’s technology has resulted in a sea change for Microsoft, DeVilla said, to the point where he felt it was the logical next place to practice evangelism.

[From Joey Devilla spreads the gospel at Microsoft Tech Days - Techvibes Blog]

Joey always makes a great evangelist regardless of product? Why? Joey is a geek’s geek. He’s passionate, tuned in, and always willing to give something a shot, at least a couple times. I’m looking forward to getting a chance to hear him talk in the future. Might even be convinced to try ASP…maybe.
